We are excited to unveil our latest development: a versatile and user-friendly tool designed specifically for Unreal Engine 5. This tool allows seamless creation of Mesh Distance Fields for Spline Meshes, solving a common limitation by enabling static mesh conversions directly from selected spline meshes. In a single click, you can now generate Mesh Distance Fields for any spline meshes in your scene, adding an automatic static mesh component to all relevant actors effortlessly.
Mesh Distance Field (MDF) technology is not natively available for spline meshes and other dynamic meshes. Our tool bridges this gap by providing a one-click solution to create MDFs for all selected Actors with Spline Meshes in the scene. By converting them into static meshes, you can utilize the powerful Mesh Distance Field feature to improve your project’s optimization and enhance visual effects.
A key feature of our tool is its intuitive selection system, which displays a list of all static meshes used within the spline mesh components of each selected actor. This detailed list enables you to conveniently choose the specific meshes you want to convert, making it especially useful for complex scripted spline tools that incorporate multiple, individually stretched spline meshes along a spline. You can selectively add MDFs only to those spline meshes that truly require them, giving you complete control over your scene's optimization.
Initially, we intended to make the conversion minimally affect the performance. We add only one static mesh component with a single triangle per selected actor, minimizing any performance overhead. This static mesh component is not rendered in the Main Pass, does not cast shadows, and is solely utilized for Mesh Distance Field purposes. This approach ensures that we achieve the benefits of MDF with virtually no performance cost, keeping the scene as optimized as possible.
Developed entirely with Blueprints, the tool features an Editor Utility Widget that integrates smoothly into Unreal Engine’s editor interface. The widget provides a streamlined workflow for selecting, converting, and managing your spline meshes' MDFs, making it accessible for artists, designers, and developers alike.
Our Mesh Distance Field Generator for Spline Meshes is a game-changer for Unreal Engine 5 projects. It simplifies the process of adding MDFs to spline meshes, offers selective control over conversions, and maintains performance efficiency. This tool is ideal for anyone looking to enhance their scene with MDF-enabled spline meshes, providing the flexibility and efficiency required for diverse project needs. Whether you’re working on complex spline-based tools or optimizing a large scene, our tool is designed to elevate your workflow in Unreal Engine 5.
