Check out how we successfully ported and adapted for mobile platforms hud with full preservation of functionality and visual consistency.
Case: Brigada Games ported the game, which was originally developed for PC/Console, to iOS, which allowed a developer and a publisher to tap into a new mobile games audience.
Process description:
The optimization was carried out on the iOS.
The challenge of adapting the control and HUD interface for the mobile platform without loss of functionality, also drawing new UI elements and adapting inherited elements while maintaining visual consistency with the original design seemed daunting at first.
Not only was the original design overloaded with features and elements, but its art style contained a lot of contrast, heavy visual techniques, and opaque colors (black was often used). While this had worked well on the PC/Console versions, it would not translate properly onto a mobile device with its smaller form factor. This difficulty was further compounded by the fact that the interface of the parent platforms was still being developed, so there were no well-defined rules to go by when designing solutions for the mobile platform. Moreover, technical limitations made it impossible to use most of the UI on the mobile platform.
In order to overcome this obstacle, we first held close consultations with the UI/UX department of the PC/Console versions team. This enabled us to anticipate issues in advance and develop a universal design which took into account all of the different platforms. We then adopted flexible visual solutions, focusing on the key aspects of the original design while adapting everything else as much as possible. This allowed us to maintain visual consistency and optimal convenience on the mobile platform.
Further user experience was tested and gathered through surveys and other means, enabling us to analyze and adjust the interface accordingly. Finally, technical implementation was monitored with the help of experts to ensure that the designs were not only preserved, but optimized for mobile platforms.
In the end, these measures allowed us to successfully adapt the control and HUD interface for the mobile platform without loss of functionality. The interface maintained its visual style and provided the desired level of usability.
